JCR is based on 2020 data compiled from the Web of Science Core Collection ™, the flagship collection of quality journals, books and conference proceedings in the world’s largest publisher-independent global citation database. Structured data is curated by a global team of Clarivate experts who continually evaluate and select the collections covered to ensure accurate journal impact assessments. These insights enable researchers, publishers, editors, librarians and sponsors to explore the key factors that determine a journal’s value to different audiences, making better use of the wide array of data and metrics available in the JCR.
Highlights for 2021: This year, the publication includes over 20,000 journals from 113 countries on five continents and 254 research categories in the natural, social, humanities and humanities.
More than 14,000 journals have at least one Gold Open Access publication, of which over 4,600 are fully open access.
New Expanded Content: This year, 8,771 journals were added to the JCR, and content expanded across the Web of Science Core Collection. The Arts and Humanities Citation Index (AHCI) ™ and New Source Citation Index (ESCI) ™ will be included in the JCR for the first time this year, accounting for over 70% of the content. With this addition, JCR journal literature coverage will now reflect the full range of research covered by all journals in the Web of Science Core Collection.
New Journal Citation Indicator: Developed by the Scientific Information Institute (ISI) ™ at Clarivate, this new metric is the category-normalized average impact of citing articles published over the previous three-year period, providing a single journal-level metric that can be easily interpreted and compared across disciplines. The Journal Citation Index will be calculated for all journals in the Web of Science Core Collection, including those without Journal Impact Factor (JIF) ™.
New User Interface: 2021 JCR offers an updated user interface that allows you to easily and intuitively explore and visualize layered, rich JCR data. The new graphics improve the user experience by making searches easier and more direct, allowing deeper exploration of the data. The new interface is based on extensive user feedback, and dual access to the new and old platforms will be available through the end of 2021.
Early Access Content: Expanded coverage in this year’s issue will feature early access articles that reflect the earliest availability of new research as it appears in the “transcript” prior to official publication.
