You have read reports, essays, articles by journalists, publicists, and writers about the soldiers of the undeclared Afghan war. And, of course, I noticed that in public opinion there are two opposing views on the problem of “Afghans”: some consider them to be a ruined generation, others consider them to be the best part of our society, people who have endured terrible trials with the ability to do uncompromising things, the ability to say “yes” and “no” bluntly… Molodaya Gvardiya Publishing House For the first time, an attempt was made to give the floor to the “Afghans” themselves. Through Komsomolskaya Pravda, we appealed to the participants of the Afghan war to send documentary evidence about it. These materials have compiled this book. We consider it our civic duty to continue the Afghan theme in our publications in order to restore the truth of the tragic moment in our history in its entirety. We appeal to the returned soldiers, relatives and friends of the deceased with a request to send us letters, diaries, memoirs and other evidence, as well as interesting photographic materials.

For ten years, our boys were killed in a foreign country, in Afghanistan. Why did this happen? Why have we all been silent for ten long years? “Monument in Kabul” is the title of a book by military journalist Alexander Oliynik. The very name suggests that its pages are dedicated to those sons of the Soviet Fatherland, whose blood was baked on the hot soil of Afghanistan, to all those who, with their personal military courage, established a new height of international achievement, showed fraternal solidarity, military mutual assistance, and ardent devotion to the ideals of socialism. The essays that make up the book comprehensively reveal the appearance of Soviet people — soldiers and officers, military doctors, nurses — all those who, together with the soldiers of the Afghan army and the people’s militia, fought and are fighting for the future of democratic Afghanistan.
