Abai Kunanbayev (1845-1904) is widely known as the founder of Kazakh literature, a humanist poet who combined the centuries-old traditions of the Zhyrau steppe singers with European culture in his work. He was a subtle lyricist and a deep thinker, and a satirist who castigated the vices of his contemporaries. Abai’s life is not rich in external events, but it is filled with creative pursuits, the search for new forms, and correspondence dialogue with the classics of the West and East. Abai is not only the son of the Great Steppe, fighting for the enlightenment and prosperity of his people, but also an interlocutor of Pushkin and Goethe, Shakespeare and Descartes, along with them entering the pantheon of great figures of world culture.
