The history of Karaganda

Karaganda is a city in Kazakhstan, the administrative center of the Karaganda region. The name of the city comes from a low-growing shrub of caragana with yellow flowers, often colloquially referred to as yellow acacia. In 1857, the Ivanovo mine, a mining operation for the extraction of coal, appeared on the territory of present—day Karaganda. In 1931, the mining settlement of Karaganda was transformed into a work settlement, and since 1934 it has been a city. The city is located in the central part of Kazakhstan and is a major industrial, scientific and cultural center. Administratively, the city is divided into two districts: Kazybek bi and Alikhan Bokeikhanov. Large coal mining enterprises, machine-building enterprises, metalworking and food industries operate in Karaganda. The city has a large number of enterprises in transport, education, science, culture and communications.
